Victoria rocked by magnitude 5.9 earthquake

Residents warned of aftershocks after powerful tremor

A powerful earthquake has shaken Melbourne and regional Victoria, causing damage and prompting warnings of aftershocks.

The magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Mansfield, 180km north-east of Melbourne, at 9.15am on Wednesday. It was felt across Victoria and in parts of New South Wales and South Australia.

Victoria's Emergency Management Commissioner, Andrew Crisp, said the earthquake was the largest to hit the state in more than 15 years. He warned residents to be prepared for aftershocks, which could continue for days or even weeks.

"We're asking people to remain calm and follow the instructions of emergency services," Crisp said.

The earthquake caused damage to buildings in Melbourne and regional Victoria. In Melbourne, the Rialto Towers and the Eureka Tower were evacuated after reports of damage. In regional Victoria, buildings in Mansfield, Seymour and Kilmore were also damaged.

The SES has received more than 1,000 calls for assistance since the earthquake. Most of the calls have been for reports of damage to buildings, but there have also been reports of people being injured.

The earthquake has also caused power outages in some parts of Victoria. Powercor is working to restore power to affected areas.

Residents who have been affected by the earthquake are urged to contact the SES on 132 500.
